In Commemoration

Photograph of the plaque on Rooley Tops

Thanks for visiting the only really serious page on this site! This is a photograph of the plaque that is present in many of the photographs on this site. It reads:

"In Commemoration of the five miners who died in the 1957 Sutton Colliery (Brierley Pit) Disaster and in tribute to all those who worked at the colliery 1872-1989

Laid on behalf of the local community by the friends of Brierley Forest Park 2003"

In case you are not familiar with the park, Rooley Tops, where the plaque is situated, is now recognised by some as the highest point in Nottinghamshire, and was formed by the landscaping of Sutton Colliery Spoil Heap (Pit Tip).

The AirMaster was brought up in a mining village in Derbyshire, and later in No. 5 Area as it was then known, and many of his friends and family were involved in mining.

To all those, past and present, who earn their living in the depths of the Earth, respect.
